Plesiastrea corals (often written Plesiastrea, sometimes called “button corals”) are hardy large-polyp stony (LPS) corals that form encrusting or small mound-like colonies with tig htly packed, fleshy polyps. They typically display muted to vibrant colors—such as greens, browns, and oranges—and can resemble small button-like clusters when their polyps are extended. Their resilience and adaptability make them a good choice for reef keepers looking for a hardy, lower-maintenance LPS coral. For care, Plesiastrea prefer low to moderate lighting and gentle to moderate water flow, which helps keep their polyps open and healthy. They do well in stable water conditions (temperature ~76–80°F, salinity ~1.025, alkalinity 8–9 dKH, calcium 400–450 ppm, magnesium 1250–1350 ppm) and are generally tolerant of a range of conditions if kept consistent. They can be mildly aggressive and may extend short tentacles at night, so allow some space from neighboring corals. While they rely mainly on photosynthesis, occasional feedings of fine particulate or small meaty foods can promote better growth and coloration. Show more
