Perrier's Bounty (2009)Perrier's Bounty is a sharp, darkly funny Irish crime comedy released in 2009 and directed by Ian FitzGibbon, with a screenplay by Mark O'Rowe (Intermission, Boy A). Cillian Murphy plays Michael McCrea, a small-time Dublin criminal who owes money to the feared gangster Perrier (Brendan Gleeson) and has 24 hours to pay up or face the consequences. When a neighbour is accidentally killed and Michael's estranged father Jim (Jim Broadbent) arrives unannounced claiming he is about to die, the three find themselves on the run together through a single chaotic Dublin night. Narrated with deadpan wit and populated with memorably eccentric characters, the film sits comfortably in the tradition of Intermission and In Bruges — distinctly Irish in voice, black in humour and thoroughly entertaining. A cult gem that deserves a wider audience.Highlights Cillian Murphy's performance — Lean, watchful and quietly funny; Murphy brings real conviction to Michael's escalating panic and his chemistry with both Gleeson and Broadbent gives the film its comic and emotional engine. Jim Broadbent as Jim McCrea — A wonderfully eccentric turn; Broadbent's dying father, convinced he has only hours to live, provides the film's warmest and most unexpected comic thread and steals every scene he's in. Brendan Gleeson as Perrier — Gleeson brings his customary menace and dark charisma to the role; Perrier is a genuinely threatening presence and Gleeson ensures the film never loses sight of the real danger beneath the comedy. Mark O'Rowe's screenplay — Sharp, rhythmic and full of distinctly Irish wit; O'Rowe's dialogue crackles throughout and the film's deadpan narration gives it a literary quality that elevates it above standard genre fare. The Dublin night setting — FitzGibbon makes excellent use of the city's streets and characters; the nocturnal Dublin backdrop gives the film a distinctive atmosphere and a strong sense of place that grounds the increasingly surreal events.
