Persimmon became famous in deodorizing body care largely because of nonenal, an odor compound associated with aging skin. Research has found 2-nonenal increases with age and, in one landmark study, was detected in the 40+ subjects rather than the younger group. But nonenal isn't the only compound that smells. And people under 40 definitely aren't immune to body odor. That's why we didn't formulate Persimmon Bar as an “aging odor” soap. We formulated it for stubborn body odor. Period. Our Persimmon Bar combines persimmon + zinc oxide + French green clay with our tallow-based soap formula to create a full-body cleansing bar made specifically with odor-prone skin in mind. Underarms. Underboob. Feet. Skin folds. Butt. Behind the ears. If it gets funky, this bar was made with it in mind. Why Persimmon? Here's where persimmon gets really interesting. Persimmon is naturally rich in tannins, a type of polyphenol. And while persimmon has become especially well known because of nonenal, research on persimmon tannin preparations suggests its deodorizing activity isn't necessarily limited to that one compound. Persimmon tannin preparations have also demonstrated deodorizing activity against volatile sulfur compounds in laboratory research. In other words: Persimmon isn't interesting ONLY because of “old people smell.” And that's exactly why we wanted to explore what it could do in a bar made for all-over body odor at any age. And then we added Zinc Oxide. Because apparently we don't know how to leave well enough alone. Instead of making another basic persimmon bar, we paired persimmon with zinc oxide—and there's a very specific reason we chose it. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled human study, topical zinc oxide reduced self-perceived underarm odor and reduced levels of odor-associated Corynebacterium and Staphylococcus hominis compared with placebo. Now, important distinction: that study was conducted on a leave-on zinc oxide preparation—not our soap. We're not claiming our bar produced those clinical results. But the research is one of the reasons we got so freaking excited about putting persimmon + zinc oxide together in an odor-focused formula. Then we added French green clay and built the whole thing into our tallow-based soap. What's inside?
