Peter Weiss — German for “Peter White” — is Peter Wetzer’s signature white wine from Sopron, the cool-climate appellation in northwestern Hungary where he has quietly become one of the country’s most important winemakers. A playful nod to his own name, this wine is anything but casual: it’s a serious, terroir-driven white that reflects the unique volcanic and schist soils of the region. The precise blend varies by vintage, but the character is consistent: pale gold with a slight green tint, an aromatic and precise nose of white peach, lemon zest, fresh herbs, and a stony, mineral lift. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied and taut — bright acidity, delicate stone fruit, a subtle textural richness, and a long, clean, mineral finish. Elegant and restrained in the best possible way.
