Compare the color of the litmus strip to the color key sheet on the card to determine the pH of your tap water. Your target pH is around 6.0- 7.0. If your pH is above 6, use a mild household acid, such as lemon juice or vinegar, to lower it. Add 1/2 tsp of household acid to the gallon of water and stir thoroughly. Re-measure your pH.
