A Japanese tourist witnesses a murder in the United States and is captured by the assassins responsible. The organization is called Inferno — a criminal syndicate working to consolidate the American underworld under a single conglomerate. The tourist has no name, no memories, and no apparent value. What he does have is an instinct for survival that impresses Inferno's top operative: Ein, a young woman who has herself been stripped of identity and turned into the perfect killing machine known as Phantom. Rather than eliminate him, Inferno's enigmatic weapons designer Scythe Master decides to make him useful. Renamed Zwei, the amnesiac is trained as Ein's partner and deployed as Inferno's second Phantom. Surviving means complying. Reclaiming his identity means surviving long enough to find a way out — if one exists, and if the person he is becoming in the process is someone worth recovering. Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom is a 26-episode psychological action thriller produced by Bee Train — the studio behind Noir, Madlax, and El Cazador de la Bruja — directed by Koichi Mashimo, and based on the visual novel by Nitroplus. It aired on WOWOW from April to September 2009 and represents Mashimo's fourth and final "girls with guns"-adjacent production, darker and more morally complex than its predecessors, with an original ending that departs from the visual novel. The score was composed by Yuki Kajiura — returning from all three Bee Train trilogy entries — delivering one of her most restrained and atmospheric works. Originally released in North America by FUNimation across two half-season DVD/Blu-ray volumes; the Complete Series Blu-ray + DVD Combo was released January 31, 2012. A S.A.V.E. Blu-ray followed June 4, 2013, and an Essentials Blu-ray on June 2, 2020.
