The ArtworkThe back print reproduces Tamausagi Songokū ("Songoku and the Jewel Hare"), from Tsukioka Yoshitoshi's celebrated series Tsuki Hyakushi — "One Hundred Aspects of the Moon" (1885–1892). The scene depicts Son Goku, the Monkey King from the Chinese classic Journey to the West, glaring at the Jade Rabbit said to live on the moon — a full, glowing moon dominating the composition more than in any other print in the series. The ArtistTsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839–1892) is widely regarded as the last great master of ukiyo-e. Working through a period of rapid Westernization in Meiji-era Japan, he drew on Japanese and Chinese history, folklore, and legend for his final and most acclaimed series, One Hundred Aspects of the Moon, completed in the last years of his life.
