Boraras merah, commonly known as Phoeonix Rasbora, is a small and colorful freshwater fish species belonging to the family Cyprinidae. This species is commonly found in the southern region of Borneo. The species is epidemic to Indonesia and were originally gathered within the Jelai Bila river basin, located near Nataik Sedawak, which is believed to be a nearby settlement. This area is situated in the vicinity of Sukamara town within the Indonesian province known as Kalimantan Tengah, or Central Kalimantan. "Merah" is the local term meaning red.Boraras Merah is a true blackwater fish, it Resides in blackwater streams and rivers found in conjunction with primeval forest peat swamps. The water takes on a brown hue owing to the discharge of tannins and various compounds emanating from the decomposition of organic material, while the substrate is adorned with fallen leaves, twigs, and branches. Difficulty: intermediate, they are easy to keep once the aquarium is stable. But due to their small delicate nature makes difficult at times. Appearance: The body of Boraras merah is deep red with a ellipsoidal spot in the mid line of the body. It is often confuse with Boraras merah but the midline spot isnt extended and the body is somewhat smaller.Tank requirements: Prefer a densely planted aquarium with plenty of hiding places, such as rocks and driftwood. Water is tannin stained, substrate composed of fallen branches, leaf litter, gravel and rock. Size: 15-20mmpH: 4.0 – 6.5 TDS: 18 – 90water temperature: of 20-28°C (70-84°F) Diet: In the wild, Boraras merah feed on small invertebrates and insects. In the aquarium, they will accept a variety of foods, including flake food, freeze-dried or frozen foods, and small live foods such as brine shrimp or daphnia.Behavior: Boraras merah are peaceful and social fish that do well in small groups of 6-8 individuals. They are active swimmers and spend most of their time in the middle and upper levels of the aquarium.Breeding: Boraras merah are egg-layers and breeding can be difficult in captivity. They require very soft and acidic water, as well as a densely planted aquarium with fine-leaved plants such as Java moss.
