Phormium ‘Yellow Wave’ – Graceful Stripes with Year-Round Impact Phormium ‘Yellow Wave’ is a stylish, evergreen perennial valued for its long, arching foliage boldly striped with lime-yellow and green. This compact New Zealand Flax cultivar adds soft movement and vibrant contrast to borders, containers, and contemporary gardens. Its refined form and easy-going nature make it a versatile choice for brightening planting schemes all year round. Seasonal Beauty & Growth Spring: In early spring, fresh leaves emerge in bright chartreuse and green tones, forming a softly arching fountain of striped colour. As surrounding plants awaken, ‘Yellow Wave’ stands out as a bold yet calming anchor in the landscape. Summer: Through summer, the foliage maintains its clean, yellow-green variegation, glowing especially in sunlight or against darker backdrops. In ideal conditions, mature plants may send up flower spikes with tubular blooms that attract pollinators and add vertical interest. Autumn: The foliage remains fresh and striking into autumn, contrasting beautifully with seasonal hues like bronze, red, and rust. Its texture and colour provide a graceful transition into the cooler months. Winter: In milder climates, ‘Yellow Wave’ stays evergreen, holding its shape and colour throughout the winter. It adds winter structure and brightness, particularly in container displays or architectural plantings. Structure & Form Height & Spread: Reaches approximately 90–120 cm tall with a similar spread, making it compact enough for smaller gardens but bold enough to make an impact. Form: A fountain-like clump with long, arching leaves that flow outward in a soft, architectural shape. Growth Habit: A tidy, clump-forming perennial that slowly increases in size without becoming invasive. Perfect for Various Landscapes Modern & Urban Gardens: Its clean lines and fresh colouring suit contemporary planting schemes and minimalist designs. Coastal & Windy Sites: Excellent tolerance of salt-laden winds and sandy soils, making it ideal for exposed coastal gardens. Containers & Courtyards: A fantastic choice for pots, bringing year-round colour and form to patios, balconies, and entranceways. Mixed Borders & Gravel Gardens: Its vibrant variegation contrasts beautifully with darker foliage or muted stone tones in xeriscaped or Mediterranean-style gardens. Growing Conditions & Care Position: Prefers full sun to light shade. Sunlight brings out the clearest yellow tones, though it tolerates partial shade well. Soil: Grows best in well-drained, fertile soils. Avoid heavy or waterlogged ground. Maintenance: Very low-maintenance. Trim away any damaged leaves in early spring. Water in dry spells during establishment. Hardiness: Hardy in USDA zones 8–11. In colder climates, protect with mulch or grow in containers that can be sheltered in winter.
