Lampion plant (Physalis) is a genus of 75 to 90 species of plants in the nightshade family (Solanaceae). The botanical name Physalis means bladder, and is derived from the shape of the outgrown calyx of the true lantern plant (Physalis alkekengi) that encloses the fruit after flowering. The true lantern plant is the only representative of this genus in Europe; most of the other species are native to Mexico. Show more
