Polyisobutene phenol, polyisobutylene phenol, PIB-phenol, or polyisobutenyl phenol, hydroxyl-terminated. Used as an educt for further reactions to blockcopolymers or fuel additives. Polyisobutene phenols are obtained by alkylation of an aromatic hydroxy compound with essentially homopolymeric polyisobutenes in the presence of a Lewis acidic alkylation catalyst. Polyisobutene phenol is an important starting product for the production of fuel detergents and is itself used as a fuel additive. It is advantageous if the phenol is essentially monoalkylated and/or substituted in the para position. Poly(isobutylene) phenol serves as a viable precursor in the synthesis of diblock copolymers. Specifically, when PIB-phenol with an approximate molecular weight of 2300 g/mol is employed in a reaction that includes a suitable catalyst and ethylene oxide, the resulting product is the corresponding poly(isobutylene)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) diblock copolymer.
