Extrait de Parfum “Losing my sense of smell terrified me, threatening my livelihood and what brought me so much pleasure. When I regained my strength and nose, I went to my perfume studio to work on a commissioned fragrance. Bay of Bengal saltwater accord, dirtied drop by drop with the murky notes of patchouli, seaweed absolute, and red Buddha wood, reminiscent of river pollution, pyre ashes, aquatic funk. Mitti attar accord sourced from Kannauj, remnants of worship flowers, carnation, rose, and marigold, bright and spicy florals punctuated by cardamom and the nutmeg at its heart. Perfume would be my pilgrimage.” —from In Sensorium: Notes For My People by Tanaïs Pilgrimage is one of the most evocative perfumes in the Studio Tanaïs collection, an expansive, compelling portrait of the sacred Ganges, the transboundary river rising in the Himalayas and emptying into the Bay of Bengal. Named for Ganga, goddess of purification and forgiveness, the Ganges is worshipped as a living entity, the most sacred water in Hinduism. Thousands of people seek to bathe and offer tributes, cleanse the body of sin and feel reborn. Lanterns are floated, flowers scattered, little candle rafts carrying hopes and prayers onto the river. Conjured into existence during the height of Covid, Pilgrimage speaks of yearning, a desire to flee enforced isolation and seek out a more profound sense of self. There are scented glimpses of abandoned ruins eaten by jungle, hot rain, worn mossy stones and glossy foliage dripping with downpour. Saltwater, mitti attar and seaweed absolute conjure the Ganges with shadowy patchouli notes that hint at darkness below the surface. The bitter aromatics of juniper leaf, nutmeg, cardamom and saffron open Pilgrimage, hinting at heritage and trade, then a generous offering of flowers: roses, marigolds and carnations, garlanded as tributes. Perfume as human and holy ablution. An unsettling pyre ash note rises mournfully in the final stages of Pilgrimage, anchoring the scent and serving to remind us that mortality is fleeting and we all return to the eternal cycle of life.
