Danaus plexippus The Monarch is the best-known of all North American butterflies and has one of the most interesting migratory stories. The Monarch has a 4 stage lifecycle - egg, l arva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult butterfly. There are 4 generations; the first is born in March to April; second is born May to June; the third is born July to August; and the fourth is born September to October. All but the fourth generation live 2-5 weeks. The fourth called the Methuselah generations, lives 6-8 months. To help raise understanding of wildlife in the park, Yosemite Conservancy helps fund critical wildlife research conducted by Yosemite National Park Service. These projects, in turn, inform strategies and conservation plans to help ensure the future of these wonderful animals.
