Pine tar is thought to exert its effect by reducing DNA synthesis and mitotic activity, which promotes a return to normal keratinisation. In addition, pine tar has been shown to be antipruritic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antifungal. These properties make pine tar suitable for the topical treatment of eczema, psoriasis, seborrhoeic dermatitis and other dry, itchy, flaky or inflamed skin conditions. And for this time of year, especially, we LOVE it for POISON IVY! Pine tar soap for poison ivy is an age old remedy as it helps to neutralize urushiol, which is the oil in poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac that most people have an allergic reaction to! Its smoky campfire-like scent makes it a popular “manly” soap, but can be equally enjoyed by all! Though I love the smell-some might not, bc pine tar itself has a really strong aroma. In addition to the ping tar, itself- I also add cedarwood and lavender essential oils to help slightly mellow and compliment the overall scent profile.
