The Chipotle Smoked Porter is built on a grist where smoked malts account for a full 20% of the grain bill — split between classic rauch malt (traditionally beechwood-smoked) and cherrywood smoked malt. This dual-wood smoking technique creates a more layered, complex smoke character than porters relying on a single smoked malt variety. Real chipotle peppers are incorporated into the brew, contributing a recognizable dried-pepper warmth without steering the beer into novelty territory.Tasting NotesAroma: Roasted malt leads the nose immediately, followed by a distinct chipotle pepper presence — dried and earthy rather than sharp. Underneath, wisps of campfire smoke and a faint cocoa character round out the bouquet.Taste: The entry is dominated by beechwood smoke, rich and assertive but clean. At mid-palate, the profile shifts into dark chocolate, earthy coffee, and a subtle mineral note some drinkers describe as loamy or dirt-like. Chipotle pepper builds gradually through the middle, adding warmth without capsaicin heat overwhelming the malt backbone.Finish: The back end is where the chocolate and peppery spice fully converge, leaving a slow, gentle burn at the back of the throat. The finish is moderate in length, with lingering roast and a dry, smoky echo that invites the next sip.How to Drink Chipotle Smoked PorterThis porter is best served at cellar temperature, around 50–55°F, to let the smoke and pepper complexity fully express. Pouring into a tulip or snifter glass concentrates the smoky aroma. For cocktail-curious drinkers, it works in several beer-based applications: a Black Velvet variation (layered with dry cider) where the smoke adds savory depth; a Beer Margarita — the chipotle character naturally echoes the smoked salt rim of a mezcal-style margarita; or a Michelada, where the porter's roast and pepper profile amplifies the cocktail's inherent spice and umami.Best For Sharing at a backyard barbecue alongside smoked meats Gifting to a craft beer enthusiast who gravitates toward bold, experimental styles Pairing with a chili cook-off or Tex-Mex dinner spread Exploring as part of a smoked beer tasting flight Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat does Chipotle Smoked Porter taste like? The chipotle addition is genuine — not a flavoring extract — contributing real dried-pepper earthiness and a measured, slow heat that never overshadows the dark malt foundation. With an 86 on BeerAdvocate and consistent praise for its restraint at 7.5% ABV, this porter demonstrates that bold ingredients don't require a heavy hand. It occupies a specific niche in the smoked beer category: assertive enough to satisfy smoke and spice seekers, but balanced enough to remain approachable across multiple pours.
