In 1972 when Planxty recorded this their first album Irish music all at once moved in an extraordinary and exciting new direction! The magnificent body of traditional music compiled over many centuries changed it's wardrobe and soon was clothed with new harmonies and rhythms bred of cross breading with input from contemporary constructs, foreign cultures, and instruments never before employed in the music like bouzouki, mandolin, and even hurdygurdys. The young brilliant musicians and singers who came together to form Planxty had already made a name for themselves before - Andy Irvine, Liam O'Flynn, Donal Lunny, and Christy Moore. Together they weaved beautiful new arrangement concepts that were luxurious and dramatic. And they set the stage for all the great new Irish bands that soon followed in their footsteps, like The Bothy Band, DeDanan, and Solas, and so many others.
