The act of painting is a visual conversation between Arran and the surface he works with; in his practice the surface is just as important as the marks he adds to it. In this colle ction of work Arran has attempted to visually document the passage of time. For each piece he began by placing linen and canvas on his studio floor and allowing the material to be walked on by visitors. This allowed for the layering of marks to accrue over a long period of time. Following the floor process, Arran added gestured linear marks by hand intended to reflect movement over a short period of time. In doing this Arran has created a juxtaposition between the slower and more subtle marks with the faster and more vibrant marks, resulting in abstract yet highly conscious works. Show more
