Although playing cards didn't reach Europe until the fourteenth century, don't suppose that the Ancient Greeks and Romans were left twiddling their thumbs. In fact, they were flash ing their fingers at each other: the game of morra (what Aristotle called ἐπάλλαξις τῶν δακτύλων, and Varro micare digitis) was the ancient rock-paper-scissors, where players would simultaneously reveal a number of fingers as one guessed the total digits on show. The game had high standards: Cicero once wrote that it was the mark of an honest chap that you could play morra with him in the dark, since he would never lie about how many fingers he held up.
