ERC4996 is a 53mm core plug (also known as a freeze plug or Welsh plug) designed to seal the core holes in the engine block left over from the casting process. On Land Rover's 2.25 Petrol, 2.5 Petrol, 2.5 Diesel, 200Tdi, and 300Tdi engines, failed or corroded core plugs are a common cause of coolant loss and can lead to overheating if not addressed promptly. Correct sizing at 53mm is critical - an incorrectly sized plug will not seat properly and will leak.
