In 1775, Claude-Nicolas Ledoux designed a Musical Theatre in Besançon, France, which was built between 1778 and 1784. Taken from Ledoux's 'L'Architecture Consideree' 1804, this str iking image shows a reflection of the Besançon auditorium in the pupil of a human eye. This etching, probably by Ledox himself, is an embodiment of his concept of all architecture as a spectacle of which the architect is both author and spectator. Soane shared his interest in spatial compositions that stimulated the senses and the imagination of the viewer. This print is colour matched to the original and approved by Sir John Soane's Museum.
