A perennial conversation piece (so to speak) that performs well in cool, moist, shade gardens. Large, chocolate-mottled palmate leaves hide a spectacular flower in April and May — clusters of 5 or more of the deepest red, pendent, "shredded" blooms. It's best elevated in a tall pot, on a pedestal, or on a bank above a walkway so that it's easier to see its sequestered deep red secret of a flower. On the other hand, it is rhizomatous and will need to be in the garden to proliferate, blanketing the bed with its beautiful (if slightly reptilian) pointillism.
