Owing to the “quality of the kernel”, Felix Gillet wrote in 1888 that “no variety recommends itself better for the family garden than the Proeparturiens”. Confirmed over generation s in Lake County as an unreliable producer from year to year, it is nevertheless regarded universally as the best tasting of all the walnuts. With a spherical, dense shell and a small, circular shaped half-kernel, they crack out in my shelling equipment with a low percentage of complete halves, perhaps 10 – 20%. But the buttery flavored nut has a perceptible sweetness and a near complete lack of astringency or bitterness that make it a hands-down favorite. Try them, you'll see. Show more
