Polychrome jasper is usually opaque and has a smooth, earthy appearance rather than a glassy transparency. It has a hardness of about 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, making it fairly durable for handling and polishing. Each piece is visually unique, with no two stones showing the same colour patterns.
