This is one our favorite Solomon's seals for the woodland garden, but one which has a most confusing past. Polygonatum hirtum (hirtum = hairy) is considered an invalid synonym for Polygonatum latifolium, but this form we purchased from the former Heronswood Nursery in 1999 is completely different from our numerous collections of Polygonatum latifolium. Dan remembers getting his from our plant exploring friends at Crug Farm in Wales, but that's where the trail runs cold. Until DNA research is completed to sort out its true identity, we've given it the cultivar name, Polygonatum hirtum 'Round Tuit'. Polygonatum 'Round Tuit' forms a wonderfully thick clump of upright, arched 15" tall stalks, clothed with very dark green, thick, nearly round, 2.5" wide leaves. The stalks are also adorned with small, white, axillary-produced flowers in mid-April (NC). Polygonatum 'Round Tuit' forms an easy-to-grow 2' wide patch in 5years. When you order yours, you'll have gotten a round tuit.
