The word blue appears in Middle English around the 13th century. Before the sea was commonly described as blue, pontos was the Homeric word for the open sea: vast water, distance, passage, and return. Its colour belongs to another language of perception — green, dark, wine-deep, shifting with light, depth, and danger. At the centre of the Pontos Ring, natural fluorite holds this unstable colour world: green, violet, and purple tones moving through a single stone. Its wide, sculptural form becomes a fragment of that ancient sea language. Excavated from Homeric language and the buried memory of the Aegean, the Pontos Ring returns as an object of depth, and perception.
