Redoubt in September sunshine. I started this piece outside on a bright fall day off Bridge Access Road on the way to Kenai - one of my favorite views of Redoubt. I brought a palette knife and oil paints that my great aunt Ann gave me 30 years ago. The turpentine was so old it had rust flakes in it... which blended rather nicely in with the yellow ochre! I finished the painting indoors with thick layers and gestural knife strokes - how my Aunt painted. I've always loved her style: free, confident, no-nonsense. I'll need to work a lifetime to be as cool as her. She never married or had kids. Had her own "Pottery Dome" near Lassen in Northern California where her and my grandma grew up. I am grateful for the people in my life who don't have kids, who can share their talents differently because of that.
