Promoted to the 1st class in 1865, he received the first prize and was particularly noted for his exceptional technique and mastery of watercolour.Postolle also worked with Charles-Auguste Questel, principal of an important studio that produced six winners of the Grand Prix de Rome — the highest honour bestowed by the École des Beaux-Arts.
