Meet our newest addition to the flute making kit family! The Pre Bored Drone Flute Making Kit is our most advanced woodworking kit and is best suited for woodworkers with lots of experience and a fully equipped shop. This kit includes a set of four matched western red cedar flute halves, a pre cut walnut spline, matched low profile blocks and leather, two cedar strips for clamping, our Pre Bored Flute Kit booklet, and a special set of instructions on the aspects of making a drone that differ from making a single flute. This kit can be tuned to the keys of A, G, or F#, just like our single Pre Bored Flute Kit. The Pre Bored Drone Flute Making Kit is bored with a 7/8 inch bore diameter and features our precisely routed sound holes (not finger holes) and blocks to ensure a high voice quality. What’s involved in making a Pre Bored Drone Kit into a finished Drone Flute? -Glue each set of flute halves together to make two separate glued blanks. -Sand the outsides of the flute blanks once dry to remove the glue bead and any irregularity. -Perfect the fipple holes using metal files -Using a table saw, trim down the mating walls of each flute blank to 1/16” thickness. -Using the cedar clamping slats, glue the spline between the two flute halves -Measure and pre drill the fingering holes and four direction hole using the provided measurements. -Shape the flute blank to the desired shape using either hand shaping tools or a belt sander - Fully hand sand the blank down to 180 grit (it will need to be touched up after tuning, so don’t bother sanding with 220 grit yet) -Tune the Drone Flute using the instructions provided - Finish sand the Drone Flute and prepare for varnishing/oiling - Apply your desired finish to the inside and outside of the flute (you must apply finish after the flute is glued because the glue seam needs to be sealed to avoid delamination) -Carve your blocks avoiding the groove - Apply desired finish to the blocks -Enjoy your new Drone Flute! As you can see from the directions, this is not a quick or easy process. It may seem tempting to buy this less expensive kit to save money, but after buying all the supplies you need to complete it you may find that it was not the less expensive option after all!
