Turtles symbolize the earth and water, and appear frequently in historic art from Central America, including the Coclé culture in Panama. The people of ancient Coclé were highly sk illed craftspeople and metalworkers, known for their gold pieces and intricate painted ceramics. Their goldsmiths were masters of the lost-wax casting process. Turtles were used in creation stories regarding the origin of the Earth, and symbolize good health and longevity because of their long lives.
