Pria's family come from a long line of weavers. As industrialization has replaced most of the work done by hand, this trade has fallen by the wayside, and most families struggle to provide. Pria's family had actually done fairly well despite these challenges, and saved enough to pay the dowry for one of her older sisters, 14 & 12, but unfortunately not enough for both. Pria was sold to a rock quarry to fund her second sister's wedding. To learn more about child marriage in India, read this link. She worked in the rock quarry for over a year and endured physical and sexual abuse throughout her time there. Pria worked from sunrise to sunset performing extremely strenuous and tedious work. Pria and the other workers were only fed a single meal a day, and this malnourishment on top of everything else made the day to day hard to abide, but an older woman encouraged her to hope and not to despair. Soon after that conversation, Pria was rescued from the rock quarry by one of our field teams. Today, Pria lives at The Sylom Children's Home, and she is going to school and learning about God's Love for the first time. She is in the 3rd grade, and her favorite class is math.
