These flat-bodied succulent plants get their name from the spiny fruits they b ear (it can take 3-4 years for the Opuntia to start growing fruit) which are commonly eaten as a refreshing snack across Mexico. As they grow naturally in dry desert environments, they don't need to be watered all that often and like sunlight - perfect for a windowsill (just be aware of scorching occurring).
