Incentive Create printed artwork to showcase musical notation-Line-Shape-Space-Colour-Texture Supplies Art paper Small polystyrene tray (fruit tray) Pencil Primary coloured food dyes (diluted with water) Paint (dark colour) Paintbrush Sponge or sponge brush Lesson 1 Cover art paper with two or three of the primary-coloured dyes blue, red and/or yellow. For this, use food dye diluted with water. Allow the colours to slightly to blend, to make an interesting pattern. Leave to dry. 2 On a small polystyrene board (approx. 8 x 10 cms) use the tip of a pencil to draw the outline of a musical note. Draw the note in reverse order. When it is printed the note will appear correctly. Keep the drawing simple. Go over pencil lines again with the pencil tip, but this time press firmly so that it makes a track in the polystyrene. Do this for the whole image. 3 Cover a sponge with dark coloured paint and spread it around so it is not too thick. Press the image side of the polystyrene on to the sponge. Lift and then press carefully onto the art paper. Alternatively, you can use a sponge brush to cover polystyrene with paint. 4 Try to keep polystyrene still, simple press, rub palm over it slightly and lift. Repeat this until art paper is covered with prints. You can use different colours for printing. Paper size and polystyrene size will determine how many prints you can put on the artwork. 5 Display around the room with labels linking it to your theme of work.
