An acrylic cartridge alignment protractor cut for Baerwald geometry, with four pivot-to-spindle scales covering Pro-Ject’s 8.6, 9, 10 and 12-inch tonearms. A pivoted tonearm cannot keep a cartridge tangent to the groove all the way across a record; the arc it swings through is not the straight line the cutting lathe travelled. What alignment geometry does is choose where the two null points — the radii where tracking error is exactly zero — should sit, and thereby decide how the unavoidable error is distributed across the side. Align it PRO uses the Baerwald solution, also known as Löfgren A, which minimises the peak distortion across the whole playable surface. Pro-Ject sets the tool up around the inner Baerwald null point at a 66.0mm radius, giving 16.21mm of overhang. It is a single-null-point design rather than the traditional two-point protractor, which makes it faster to use and removes one of the two places you can misread. Four pivot-to-spindle distances are printed on the acrylic: 200mm for Pro-Ject’s 8.6-inch arms, 212mm for their 9-inch arms, 238mm for their 10-inch arms and 291.6mm for their 12-inch arms. If you own another brand of turntable, check your manual for its pivot-to-spindle distance — if it matches one of those four, the tool will work perfectly well; if it does not, this is not the right protractor for you and you want a continuously adjustable universal one instead.
