How the Spacer Works The cypress spacer functions as a feeder rim, treatment placement area, upper entrance, or quilt board. The top of the rim has pre-drilled holes covered with removable screens — leave them in place for ventilation from the bottom of the hive through the top, or remove them to use as an upper entrance. The bottom of the rim has a large screen that supports feeders, treatments, or other materials while still letting bees move freely through the hive. When top feeding with baggie feeders or top feeders, the spacer provides the clearance bees need to access the feed. In winter, Pro Winter Feed, fondant, or dry sugar can be placed directly inside the rim. Absorbent materials like wood chips can also go in the screened area to catch condensation before it drips back onto the cluster.
