This is one of those brilliantly bonkers aromatic whites that somehow manages to be wildly perfumed whilst still staying beautifully fresh and dangerously drinkable. Exotic, energetic and packed with personality — like Northern Italy accidentally took a holiday in the Adelaide Hills. Protero Aromatico is made by Stephen and Fiona Pannell from their cool-climate Adelaide Hills vineyard near Gumeracha. Inspired by the leaner, fresher aromatic blends of Northern Italy, the 2023 vintage combines Gewürztraminer, Riesling and a tiny splash of Sauvignon Blanc. Fermentation took place slowly over eight weeks after each grape variety was harvested separately and blended together in tank. The wine was bottled with just a touch of residual sugar, helping soften the naturally bright acidity and giving the palate a lovely textural roundness without ever feeling sweet. There’s loads going on here — lychee, ginger, citrus blossom, rose oil, lemongrass and stone fruit — but it all stays beautifully balanced and fresh. Stephen Pannell himself describes it as “Moscato for grown-ups”, which feels pretty spot on.
