Magnificent fire fountains in the background and lava flows in the foreground of this image exemplify the dramatic nature of Kīlauea's eruptive episodes. The east rift zone of Kīla uea, where Puʻuʻōʻō arose, is a long zone of cinder cones and deep pit craters. Lava flows cover vegetation, but life always arises again in these dynamic landscapes.
