A boxer, bullfighter, and circus strongman at various points in his life, Anderson in the 1940s settled into a career as a Chattanooga-based clairvoyant, earning the trust and gratitude of an array of 20th century celebrities, including Doris Day, Vincent Price, Burl Ives, and Charlton Heston. In addition to his psychic gifts, Anderson claimed to possess the powers of telekinesis and oil dowsing by stigmata, the latter side-line having ultimately led to a 1978 mail fraud against former pro-wrestler John R. Shaw (aka "Ivan the Terrible"), for whom Anderson had been inducing gullible customers to invest in non-existent Texas oil fields.
