The Ptitsin #5 plum stands out as the premier variety from the original Ptitsin series of twelve, most of which are now rare and obsolete. These plums start green and mature to a light yellow, averaging about 3 cm (1 inch) in diameter. The fruits are freestone and exceptional sweet and pleasant aroma. Well-suited for eating fresh, the Ptitsin #5 typically becomes ready for harvest between early to mid-August in Zone 3. Ptitsin #5 was developed at the Morden Research Station (in Manitoba, Canada) and released in 1939. Growers Note: Known to be an effective pollinator for our other hybrid plums. It is highly recommended that you purchase a Canada Plum or an American Plum to pollinate our Hybrid plums, as they are self-sterile. Plum trees like fertile, well-drained soil. They should be planted at least 3-4m (12-15 ft) apart, and fruit can be expected around 4 to 6 years of age.
