The WuBi Punching Thickness Gauge is the nowadays version of the Stardivarian Punching Thickness Gauge used by the Great Master in the 17th. Century. First you adjust the desired thickness with the integrated Caliper and now you can easily mark the piece of wood you have to bring to that specific thickness with a fingertip. Stradivari used a much less precise wooden Gauge which he used to punch is thicknesses onto the inner side of Back and top. The same tool can be used even nowadays but needs more space and is of course much less precise. I love to work with the WuBi since it is light small and therefore much more handy without occupying space. Actually the WuBi is an upgraded version of one of my Punching Thickness Gauges I had already made over 30 years ago. I think it is a must have tool for every serious violinmaker who wants to have things under control. I have seen already exact copies of my Wubi but beside that they sell it for half of mine here it is a real pain to work with it as it doesn´t work properly how it should. It is very important that all parts work properly in order that you can use it with one finger when you mark. The one I use here in my workshop works at perfection already for the past 5 years. 100% made in Italy. That’s a a guarantee Edgar Approved! Also check this video to see how I use it:
