The rules are suitable for beginners to the hobby of wargaming, or for passionates who seek a straightforward way to explore the game mechanics of a new historical era. These rules have been written with the Punic Wars (PW) StarterPacks in mind, which contain all the necessary regiments required to recreate battles according to these rules: Find the corresponding 18mm StarterPack here. Find the corresponding 28mm StarterPack here. Short description of the historical period: The Punic Wars saw two opposing military systems in a fight to the finish: The Roman Legions, which were organized around heavy infantry using a standardised tactical system vs the Carthaginians, with their mixed armies of mercenaries and allies, each using their own native tactics. These rules are suited for small affairs, perhaps the sort of engagements between advance and rearguards which often took place before or after the big battles, or the sort of isolated struggle for a key terrain objective which often formed part of a much larger encounter. After the basic rules you will find some suggestions for a more advanced and challenging game. Each player needs an army, a handful of dice (the ordinary, 6-sided kind) and a ruler or tape measure. You will also need some “smoke” markers (cotton wool balls are ideal) and some small counters or stones to record casualties on units– alternatively use spare individual WoFun figurines, laid face down.
