Purcari Icewine 375ML is a Moldovan dessert wine made from frozen-harvested Muscat Ottonel and Traminer grapes, bottled at 12.5% ABV in a 375ml format. The 2014 vintage earned a Gold medal at both Mundus Vini International Wine Award and Challenge International du Vin, along with a Silver from the Decanter World Wine Awards — establishing it as one of Eastern Europe's most decorated icewines.Quick Facts: ABV: 12.5% | Origin: IGP Stefan Voda, Moldova | Style: Icewine (Dessert) | Winery: Chateau PurcariProduction & HeritageChateau Purcari is one of Moldova's most historic wineries, with roots stretching back to 1827 in the Stefan Voda region near the Black Sea. The icewine is produced from a blend of 51% Muscat Ottonel and 49% Traminer — traditional European varietals rather than the hybrid grapes commonly used in Canadian icewine production. Grapes are hand-selected and harvested at temperatures between -6°C and -8°C, ensuring the water within each berry freezes solid; pressing at these temperatures separates the ice from an intensely concentrated, sugar-rich must that is then vinified using traditional methods.Tasting NotesAroma: The nose opens with caramelized pineapple and ripe apricot before giving way to lychee, honey blossom, and beeswax. A lifted floral quality from the Muscat Ottonel adds fragrance and complexity.Taste: The entry is immediately lush and sweet, coating the palate with layers of lemon curd, ripe peach, and sweet lime rind. At mid-palate, almond pastry and tropical fruit notes emerge, supported by a velvety texture. The Traminer component contributes subtle exotic spice that prevents the sweetness from becoming one-dimensional.Finish: Long and smooth with lingering honey, lemongrass, and white grape. A thread of balancing acidity keeps the finish clean and inviting rather than cloying. How to Drink Purcari IcewineBest served well-chilled between 6–8°C in a small tulip glass, which concentrates the aromatics while controlling portion size given its richness. This icewine also works beautifully in cocktails: try it in an Ice Wine Spritz, topping it with sparkling water and a lemon twist for a lighter aperitif; in a Frozen Bellini, where it replaces peach nectar alongside Prosecco for natural sweetness and depth; or in a Dessert Martini, shaken with premium vodka and a splash of elderflower liqueur to highlight the Muscat's floral character.Best For Gifting a wine enthusiast who appreciates rare dessert wine styles Pairing with a holiday cheese course or formal dinner finale Exploring Eastern European wine beyond the typical Western regions Celebrating a special anniversary or milestone in an intimate setting Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat does Purcari Icewine taste like? Purcari Icewine delivers rich, concentrated sweetness dominated by lemon curd, ripe peach, apricot, and honey, with floral Muscat aromatics and a thread of balancing acidity. The Traminer component adds subtle spice that gives it more complexity than many single-varietal icewines. How does Purcari Icewine compare to Inniskillin Vidal Icewine? Inniskillin Vidal Blanc Icewine, the Canadian benchmark, is made from 100% Vidal (a French-American hybrid grape) and typically shows brighter stone fruit and higher acidity, while Purcari uses traditional European varietals — Muscat Ottonel and Traminer — that contribute more pronounced floral, lychee, and exotic spice notes. Both are harvested frozen and sold in 375ml bottles, but the grape varieties create distinctly different flavor profiles. Is Purcari Icewine good for sipping neat? Yes, sipping neat and well-chilled is the ideal way to experience its full aromatic complexity and layered sweetness. A small pour of 60–90ml is typically sufficient given the wine's concentration and richness.Where is Purcari Icewine made? Purcari Icewine is produced at Chateau Purcari, a historic winery founded in 1827 in the IGP Stefan Voda region of southeastern Moldova. The region's continental climate, with reliably cold winters, provides the sub-zero temperatures necessary for natural icewine production. What foods pair well with Purcari Icewine? Blue cheese such as Roquefort, where the wine's sweetness counters the salt and funk; foie gras or duck liver pâté, a classic icewine pairing that balances richness with acidity; lemon tart or crème brûlée, where citrus and caramel notes echo the wine's own character; fresh stone fruits like peaches or apricots drizzled with honey; and baklava or almond pastries that mirror the wine's nutty undertones. What sizes does Purcari Icewine come in? Purcari Icewine is commonly available in the standard 375ml half-bottle format, which is the industry norm for icewine due to the extremely low yields involved in production. Is Purcari Icewine worth the price? Purcari Icewine positions as a premium dessert wine that competes well against more expensive Canadian and German icewines, offering comparable quality and multiple international awards at a generally more accessible price point within the category. Why Purcari Icewine? What separates Purcari Icewine from much of the competition is its use of Muscat Ottonel and Traminer — aromatic European vinifera grapes that bring a floral, spice-driven dimension rarely found in icewines dominated by Vidal or Riesling. The 2014 vintage alone collected gold medals from Mundus Vini and Challenge International du Vin, a silver from Decanter, and a bronze from the International Wine & Spirit Competition — a sweep across four major international competitions. Moldova's Stefan Voda region delivers naturally cold winters that allow authentic frozen-grape harvesting without artificial intervention, and Chateau Purcari's nearly two centuries of winemaking experience ensure consistent quality vintage after vintage. For anyone seeking a genuine icewine with Old World character and proven critical recognition, this bottling delivers uncommon value in a niche category.
