Purple Wintercreeper (Euonymus fortunei 'Coloratus')Purple Wintercreeper is a low-growing evergreen groundcover valued for its dense coverage, glossy green foliage, and rich purple winter color. Its spreading stems create a carpet-like effect that works well on slopes, banks, border edges, and managed landscape beds where year-round foliage is needed. In fall and winter, the leaves shift from green to deep purple, adding seasonal color when many groundcovers are quiet. With full sun to partial shade, well-drained soil, and regular maintenance to control spread, Purple Wintercreeper provides durable coverage and bold cool-season interest.Distinctive FeaturesPurple Wintercreeper forms a trailing evergreen to semi-evergreen mat with glossy oval leaves that are dark green through the growing season and turn purple to reddish purple in cold weather. Stems root where they touch the ground, helping the plant fill in open areas quickly but also requiring management in designed landscapes. If allowed to reach a vertical surface, it may climb, so trimming is important when a groundcover habit is desired. Small greenish flowers and occasional fruit may appear, but the plant is grown primarily for foliage, coverage, erosion control, and winter color.Growing Conditions Sun: Grows best in full sun to partial shade and can tolerate considerable shade, though denser growth and stronger winter color often develop with more light. Soil: Adapts to average, well-drained soil and tolerates a range of landscape soils as long as the site does not stay wet. Water: Water regularly during establishment, then provide supplemental water during extended dry periods to keep coverage full and healthy. USDA Zones: Hardy in USDA Zones 4 to 9, with winter appearance varying by exposure, snow cover, and local climate. Mature Size: Typically reaches about 6 to 12 inches tall and spreads 2 to 4 feet or more, with wider spread possible where stems are allowed to root freely. Habit: Forms a low, trailing, spreading evergreen groundcover that can root along the stems and climb if given support. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use as a purple winter foliage focal point in managed groundcover beds, slopes, border fronts, or evergreen plantings where cool-season color is needed. Groundcover: Plant in controlled beds where a low evergreen mat can cover soil, reduce bare spots, and provide year-round foliage. Slope Planting: Use on banks or slopes where spreading stems can help stabilize soil and create dense visual coverage. Border Edge: Plant along wide bed edges or pathway margins where its low habit can soften transitions between hardscape and planting areas. Mass Planting: Use in groups for a repeated evergreen foliage effect in managed landscapes where spread can be monitored and trimmed as needed. Low Maintenance Care Watering: Water deeply during the first growing season to establish roots, then water during prolonged dry spells as needed. Mulching: Mulch lightly between young plants to reduce weeds while they fill in, keeping mulch from burying stems too deeply. Pruning: Trim regularly to control spread, maintain a clean edge, and prevent stems from climbing trees, walls, or nearby structures. Containment: Monitor rooted stems and remove unwanted growth so the plant stays within its intended planting area. Fertilizing: Fertilize only when needed in spring based on soil conditions, since established plants usually perform well in average soil. Deer Protection: Deer may browse this plant in some landscapes, so young plantings may need protection where browsing pressure is heavy. Why Choose Purple Wintercreeper? Purple Winter Color: Displays dark green foliage in the growing season that turns purple to reddish purple in fall and winter. Evergreen Coverage: Provides low, dense foliage that helps cover bare soil and maintain structure through much of the year. Adaptable Growth: Tolerates sun, partial shade, considerable shade, and many well-drained soil types once established. Slope Utility: Works well in managed slope plantings where spreading stems can provide coverage and help reduce erosion. Easy Shaping: Responds well to trimming, allowing gardeners to maintain edges and keep the plant within bounds. Purple Wintercreeper is an excellent choice for managed landscapes where a low evergreen groundcover with strong winter color is needed. Its glossy foliage, purple cold-season tones, spreading habit, and adaptable performance make it useful for slopes, border fronts, groundcover beds, and large plantings where regular maintenance can keep its growth controlled.
