As one may infer from the name, Pygmaeocereus are the smallest of the Cereus cacti, a group of plants known for their towering columnar habit. P. bieblii is native to cactus-rich region of Peru, where it embeds itself underground and only emerges after intense rainfall. This species is arguably the most iconic out of the three members in this genus. The compact geophytic habit is reminiscent of popular Mexican cacti like Turbinicarpus and has similarly unusual spines, in this case short, thick, and slightly flexible as they recurve to hug the pronounced tubercles. As far as miniature geophytes go, this species is relatively quick and easy to grow, making it a fine entry for beginners to rare cacti. Even seasoned growers can appreciate its willingness to flower and the subtle variability in spination, making it a fine candidate for selective breeding.
