Pyritized Ammonite Negative Fossil Necklace with Diamond - The fossil is set in fine silver that follows the contours of the ammonite. A 2mm natural white diamond is set into the c enter of the ammonite. The sterling silver backplate has a hand hammer texture and is stamped on back with the Shiny Objects makers mark. The pendant hangs from a heavy gauge sterling silver round rolo chain. The entire necklace is oxidized to highlight the textures. This Pyritized Pleuroceras ammonite fossil is approximately 185 million years old, from the Jurassic period. The fossil is a pyrite replacement in oil shale collected in Germany. This particular specimen was pyritized over millions of years and is a negative of the animal’s body. Organisms are pyritized when they are in marine sediments saturated with iron sulfides. In other words, pyrite has replaced its limestone shell. Ammonites are a group of extinct animals which roamed the planet’s oceans for almost 250 million years.
