Quarantine (2008)Quarantine is a found-footage horror film released in 2008 and directed by John Erick Dowdle, a remake of the acclaimed Spanish horror [REC] (2007). Starring Jennifer Carpenter as TV reporter Angela Vidal, the film follows a news crew accompanying a fire crew on a routine call to a Los Angeles apartment building, only to find themselves sealed inside by the CDC as a terrifying viral outbreak takes hold. Shot entirely in the found-footage style with handheld cameras, it is a relentlessly tense, claustrophobic experience that barely pauses for breath across its 89-minute runtime. Carpenter's committed, physically demanding performance is the film's anchor, and the final sequence remains one of the most genuinely frightening in modern horror. A strong Blu-ray presentation of an effective genre piece.Highlights The opening act — Dowdle takes his time establishing the characters and location before the horror begins; the slow build makes the eventual chaos far more effective and disorienting. Jennifer Carpenter's performance — Raw, physical and utterly convincing; Carpenter carries the film on her shoulders and makes Angela's terror completely believable throughout. The stairwell sequences — Claustrophobic, chaotic and brilliantly staged; the confined space of the apartment building is used to maximum effect as the situation deteriorates. The infected reveal — The film's escalating explanation of what is happening is handled with real economy; just enough information to heighten the dread without over-explaining. The final scene — One of the great horror endings of the 2000s; shot in near-total darkness using night-vision, it is genuinely terrifying and lands with real impact.
