The Engelmann Oak is a graceful, open-branched evergreen oak native to Southern California, prized for its soft, blue-green foliage and broad, spreading canopy. It is more drought-tolerant than many Eastern oaks and offers a light, dappled shade. While not native to Northern California, it is well-adapted to similar Mediterranean climates in the warmer, drier parts of the Bay Area. Features attractive, blue-green, leathery leaves that are less rigid and spiny than those of Coast Live Oak, giving it a softer appearance. Develops a very broad, spreading, and picturesque canopy with age, often wider than it is tall, providing excellent, filtered shade. Highly drought-tolerant once established, thriving in hot, dry, sunny locations with deep, infrequent watering. A stately and beautiful specimen tree for large properties, parks, or golf courses where its magnificent form can be fully appreciated.
