Incentive Create a wreath using paper quilling techniques.-Line-Shape-Space-Colour-Texture-Form Supplies Red and Green paper strips (1cm x 20cm strips A4 paper cut into strips) Pencil or thin paintbrush or thin wooden skewer/toothpick for rolling Paper plate … (small 15-18cms) Paint Paintbrush Scissors/paper shredder/paper cutter Strong craft glue that will dry clear Red, green, gold, silver or white ribbon (about 50 cms per wreath) Lesson 1 Start by cutting centre out of small paper plate. Fold paper plate in half to cut a small slit in centre. Open plate out to flat position and continue cutting around inner rim until the centre is completely cut off. Use bright green paint to cover the circle remaining. This will become the base for the wreath. Leave to dry. 2 Have prepared red and thin paper cut into thin strips or pass coloured paper through paper shredder. For a small paper plate children will need approximately 15 red strips and 50 green strips (less if children’s coils are large and not as tight as our sample). 3 We have found the best way to quill with young children is to use a pencil, thin paintbrush handle or a blunt skewer. Begin by holding the end of a strip onto the skewer and wrapping the paper strip around it until it runs out. Practice tightening the rolls by pulling the roll off the skewer and continue rolling tightly in hand. This will make a tight coil. Continue this process with all the strips required. You may want to put a dab of glue at the end of each strip to secure the coil does not loosen very much, but we left ours free. 4 Cover dried paper plate circle with strong glue. Completely cover it. First add red coils randomly around the wreath. Press each one down with palm of hand to secure its place in the glue. 5 Begin to add the green coils. Try to place them up close to the red coils and fill in the spaces, until most of the wreath shapes is covered. Keep pressing the quills down with palm of hand to ensure they are setting well into the glue. 6 Leave to dry for 24 hours. The wreath will now be firmly set and hard enough to hang. Add a red, green, silver, gold or white ribbon to hang. 7 Hang wreaths around the room as a Christmas display or take home as a gift to use over the Christmas period.
