Mesa Arch at sunrise is famous for a reason, and crowded for the same reason. I arrived in Canyonlands while it was still dark, claimed a spot on the slickrock, and waited for the first beam to pour through the opening and onto the canyon below. Dozens of photographers were there. The arch does not care. When the light arrived it was exactly what the guidebooks promise: a concentrated glow under the stone, the La Sal Mountains catching color in the distance, the void of the canyon still in blue shadow. I framed tight on the arch so the radiance would feel like the subject rather than the whole panorama. Utah desert sunrises move fast. The beam widens and fades in minutes. I had one clean window and used it. Mesa Arch is not a secret. This photograph is about the moment when the stone itself seems lit from within.
