Doing this prevent the wax from tunnelling down around the wick. Trim the wick regularly with a wick trimmer (ideal length between 0.5 and 1 cm) to avoid it smoking. When extinguishing the candle, check the wick is upright and centered. This will ensure the candle burns evenly right to the bottom of the glass.
