Radical acceptance is a concept in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) that entails coming to terms with the unpredictability of life. Practicing radical acceptance can be appropriate in situations where clients have little to no control. For example, instead of saying, “Life isn’t fair,” a client can consider a negative event to be difficult but temporary. The Radical Acceptance DBT Poster shows a list of 12 statements designed to help clients shift their mindset toward accepting reality. Whenever they struggle with disappointment, they can use the poster as a reference to recite phrases, such as “I won’t stress over things I can’t change” and “This is how it has to be." Using the coping statements on this poster can help kids and teens manage their stress more effectively, regardless of the level of stress they may be experiencing. As an additional tip, you can teach them mindfulness strategies like deep breathing and pair them with any of the coping statements.
